SYDNEY LIGHT RAIL: SERVICES PARTIALLY RESTORED FROM TOMORROW

Sydney Light Rail services will be partially restored between The Star and Lilyfield from 6am tomorrow, Friday 18 October. Replacement buses will continue to operate between Central and The Star.

Matt Baynie, Deputy Managing Director of Sydney Light Rail operators Transdev Sydney said, “Teams have been working around the clock to complete the required wheel replacements and re-profiling. We are also carrying out track maintenance including rail grinding to ensure we can safely recommence a partial service.”

GHD’s independent investigation indicates there were several contributing factors to the derailments that led to accelerated friction and wheel wear.

“GHD’s interim assessment suggests a section of newly installed rail in the Central to The Star section contributed to the wear.”

“We still need to carry out critical track modifications in that section. As a result we can only recommence a partial service at this stage.”

Mr Baynie said customers can be confident that the work carried out by Transdev over the past week means it is now safe for Sydney Light Rail to resume limited services.

”A daily program of track and vehicle inspections will continue,” said Mr Baynie.

“We realise the service shutdown has been inconvenient for our customers, however, we have now identified the causes, so teams will continue to work around the clock toward safely restarting a full light rail service, which we expect to be operating by early November.”

Single zone ticket fares will apply on partial light rail services between The Star and Lilyfield only. Travel on the replacement bus services will continue to be free for light rail customers.
