Transdev Sydney would like to apologise to customers affected by the temporary closure of the Sydney Light Rail network, due to two overnight derailments.

Last night, two light rail vehicles derailed at Rozelle Bay at 10.20pm and at Wentworth Park at 10.40pm. Quick response by maintenance crews ensured the Wentworth Park vehicle, derailed by two wheels, was rerailed and removed from site by 5am. The Rozelle Bay vehicle derailed by four wheels and remains at the location awaiting further rerailing assistance by work crews.

Both vehicles were operating at reduced speed at the time of derailment, as they were approaching their respective stops. Once maintenance crews deemed the respective sites to be safe, all customers disembarked from the vehicles without injury or harm.

At this stage, the cause of the derailment is suspected to be a network technical fault.

Matt Baynie, Deputy Managing Director, Transdev Sydney, said, “This is the first such incident of its kind in 15 years of light rail operation, and Transdev will be working with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the two derailments. Operational and customer safety are key network considerations for Transdev and as a result we cannot operate services until the fault is thoroughly identified, investigated, rectified, and tested to be safe. We expect this to take several days.”

To assist customer travel in the interim, buses will replace light rail services until further notice. Customers can also use their light rail tickets to access buses, CBD and Inner West Line trains and ferries at no extra cost.

“Transdev Sydney also wants to formally thank Sydney Trains rerailing crew, Transport for NSW, Transport Management Centre and Sydney Buses for the coordinated quick response in assisting our maintenance and operational staff, but most importantly for helping our customers,” said Mr Baynie.

“We will continue to ensure customers receive timely network status updates via Transport for NSW Transport Management Centre and also the 131500 website and customer info line.”
