Transdev Sydney wants to reassure customers that a thorough investigation of the cause of Monday night’s two derailments is taking place, to ensure Sydney Light Rail can return to service as soon as it is safe to do so.

Matt Baynie, Deputy Managing Director, Transdev Sydney, said, “Transdev has engaged an independent engineering firm, GHD, to conduct the investigation. The outcomes of the investigation will be reviewed by the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) prior to service commencement.”

The GHD investigative work to date indicates that there appears to be several contributing factors to Monday night’s derailments that are related to an interface issue between the wheels and the rail that has led to accelerated friction and wheel wear. The investigation is also assessing whether recent essential rail infrastructure works may have played a role.

A range of tests continue to also be undertaken to examine other possible causes. They include wheel hardness testing, rail geometry measurements, wheel and rail inspections, rail profiling and inspections and simulations of the wheel rail interface.

Plans for service rectification are well underway and include wheel repair/replacements and rail grinding works.

“At this stage, we don’t expect to be operational until at least the end of next week, at which time we may be able to commence a partial service. Replacement buses will continue to service our customers in the interim. Be assured that no one wants to be operating more than us, but the safety of our customers and staff is our highest priority. We do again apologise to our customers for the temporary closure, but we are working as quickly and as rigorously as possible to ensure we can safely recommence operations,” said Mr Baynie.

Customers can continue to use their light rail tickets to access buses, CBD and Inner West Line trains and ferries at no extra cost, and also check network status updates or by phoning 131 500.
