Opal & tickets

Whether you're enjoying Sydney's beautiful sights or exploring the Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands or Newcastle, you'll find it's easy to get around on trains, buses, ferries and light rail services. In fact, you can experience so much of Sydney and the surrounding regions on public transport. What's more, using an Opal card is the most convenient way to pay for your fares. Plan your trip with the online trip planner or travel like a local with the help of the Opal Travel app or one of the other free transport apps.

What is Opal?

Opal is the smartcard ticketing system that's used to pay for travel on trains, buses, ferries and light rail in Sydney and the surrounding regions. To travel on public transport within the Opal network, you'll need an Opal card or an Opal single trip ticket.

What is an Opal card?

Opal cards are smartcard tickets you can keep and reuse to pay for travel on public transport. Once you have an Opal card, just add value, then tap on and tap off to travel. Opal is pay as you go, but there are lots of rewards for regular travellers, including Daily and Weekly Travel Caps and the Weekly Travel Reward of half-price travel after eight paid journeys each week.*

*Excludes Sydney Airport station access fee. Each Opal week runs from Monday to Sunday.

How to get an Opal card

Adult and Child/Youth Opal cards are available over the counter from thousands of Opal retailers. To find one near you, look out for the Opal symbol at nearby stores, or visit transportnsw.info/opal-retailers.

Adult, Child/Youth, Gold Senior/Pensioner and Concession Opal cards are available to order from opal.com.au/ordercard . You'll just need to allow five to seven working days for delivery to an Australian address.

Opal single trip tickets

Opal single trip tickets and Opal single bus tickets are only available as Adult or Child/Youth single-use tickets for train, bus, ferry and light rail trips within the Opal network. They're designed as a back-up option in case you don't have an Opal card yet, or you don't have your Opal card with you. This means if you're eligible for concession travel you need to apply for a Concession or Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card to access concession fares.

Single trip tickets are available from Opal top up and single trip ticket machines at selected locations across the network
